Holly Hunter Biography

Holly Hunter is an American actress best known for her Oscar acclaimed roles in Broadcast News (1987), The Firm (1993) and The Piano (1993).

Synopsis Holly Hunter is an American actress born on March 20, 1958, in Conyers, Georgia. She studied drama in college then moved to New York to pursue acting. Hunter debuted on Broadway in Crimes of the Heart (1982). Her big break came in the Coen brothers' hit film Raising Arizona (1987). For her roles in Broadcast News (1987) and The Firm (1993), Hunter received Academy Award nominations. She won her first Oscar for The Piano (1993), and continues to act in film and on television today.

Early Life Actress Holly Hunter was born on March 20, 1958, in Conyers, Georgia. The youngest of seven children born to a sporting goods representative, Hunter starred in her first play in fifth grade as Helen Keller. After receiving a degree in drama from Pittsburgh's Carnegie Mellon University in 1980, the young Southerner moved to New York to pursue a career in acting.

Acting Career After getting stuck in an elevator with playwright Beth Henley, the two collaborated in what would eventually become Hunter's Broadway debut in Crimes of the Heart in 1982. The fledgling actress soon moved to Los Angeles, California, to pursue film work and was eventually cast in a supporting role in 1984's Swing Shift. That same year, she had her first collaboration with the Coen brothers in Blood Simple, which eventually led to a starring role in the Coens' hit comedy Raising Arizona.

In 1987, Hunter's performance as a lonely, uptight news correspondent in Broadcast News earned the actress her first Academy Award nomination. Better roles soon followed, including leads in Miss Firecracker, Steven Spielberg's Always and the made-for-TV docudrama Roe vs. Wade.

In 1993, Hunter received another Oscar nod for her supporting performance in The Firm. But it was her portrayal of a mute Scottish woman in Jane Campion's The Piano that ultimately won her the award. Unfortunately, the win was followed by a series of uneven films throughout the 1990s, including Home for the Holidays (1995), Crash (1996) and A Life Less Ordinary (1997). However, Hunter earned positive reviews in 1998 for her portrayal of a divorced New Yorker in Living Out Loud, also starring Danny DeVito and Queen Latifah, and received similar success with her performance in the Coen brothers' 2000 hit, O Brother, Where Art Thou?.

Since then, Hunter has starred in such films as Little Black Book (2004), The Big White (2005) and Jackie (2012). In 2013, it was announced that the actress would appear as Emma Parker, the mother of infamous murderer/thief Bonnie Parker, in the TV movie , set to air on the Lifetime, A+E and History networks on December 8/9, 2013.

Personal Life Hunter is currently in a relationship with actor Gordon MacDonald. The couple has twin boys together.

Holly Hunter's 35-year career has no end in sight

In the 35 years since she landed her first paid gig, Holly Hunter has proven herself an actress of almost unparalleled range. Her versatility was showcased vividly in 1993, when she starred as a mute, 19th-century bride in Jane Campion's "The Piano" (for which she won an Oscar), a sassy secretary in "The Firm" (which earned her an Oscar nomination) and a homicidal housewife in HBO's "The Positively True Adventures of the Alleged Texas Cheerleader-Murdering Mom" (which earned her an Emmy).

This week Hunter, 57, appears opposite Al Pacino as a kindhearted bank teller in David Gordon Green's "Manglehorn." On the horizon are roles in Terrence Malick's "Weightless" and Zack Snyder's "Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice" as well as a reunion with Anna Paquin, her costar from "The Piano," in the family drama "Breakable You."

Your upcoming projects could not be more different from one another.

Doing all these different kinds of wildly different experiences, it just adds to feeling very alive, and they each make me feel excited in different ways. With "Manglehorn" and "Batman," you have two directors that are comfortable in their milieu, you know? David Gordon Green knows and understands Austin [where the film is set]. He went to college with tons of the guys that he works with, so it's really nice to be on the set where there's that level of comfort and trust. And Zack should be directing giant movies, he flourishes under that pressure.

How was it working with Al Pacino for the first time?

He's lovely. He can still be very vulnerable, very open to another actor. I loved seeing that. As we get older, people close down. We get less adaptive, less flexible — literally. Curiosity can diminish, and you want safety. You want what you know. Familiarity. This is one of the reasons I like to act — it's because acting forces you into situations you don't know. I like the gypsy aspect of [acting] – I feel that it keeps me much more adaptive.
It does seem like you've consciously tried to work with a wide array of filmmakers.

Actually, that's not true. One of the things that I loved so much about [the TNT series] "Saving Grace" is that I got to work with the same people over and over again.… But I also really like to go from stage to television to movies. That's such a normal thing now. When I first started in 1980, that was not the norm, to bounce back and forth in that way. I was doing television, movies and theater all the time. I certainly did my share of bouncing.

The prevailing wisdom these days is that TV is more hospitable to women than film. Do you agree?
Yes. I'm hitting a seam right now where I don't particularly feel that way, but statistically it's true. There are, in terms of numbers, more leading roles for women in television than there are features. That's absolutely certain. And it used to be that women went into television when they got older. Now, women are going into television, period.

Is there a "Holly Hunter part" — a type of role you're offered a lot?

I am often offered roles or women who are very strong, uncompromising. But it's fun to do "Manglehorn," where I'm playing somebody who's very open, very optimistic, very positive. I don't want to bore myself.

G.J., the spiritual leader you played in the Sundance miniseries "Top of the Lake," was a singular creation. How did you and writer-director Jane Campion develop that character?

We rehearsed a lot. Jane loves to rehearse, to play theater games, Simon Says, musical chairs, talent contests, dances, a lot of improv.… I deduced some elements of her that felt like home. And when we started shooting, it kind of fell into place, you know? The character presented herself. It was really a kick to do that and a great group of women at that women's camp, to be hanging out with everybody. And Jane was just a blast. She's so silly and fun.

You've built a long career while mostly avoiding typical leading-lady roles. How do you think you've managed to stay around?

It's something I'm proud of, to have longevity in a career that is as challenging as this one is. There's something mysterious about the whole process of hammering out a career; there's a lot of serendipity. I don't know a whole bunch of people who have the [production] shingles, and they're reeling out great projects for themselves to star in. Generally, actors hang around on the surface of the water waiting for something to hit, and I've always enjoyed that. There's really a lot to be said for sticking around.

Were there moments when you worried about what might come next?

No. I am not built that way. I know brilliant actors who feel they will never work again, and I've never had that. Sometimes I go into a very minor depression about, like, why can't I get better stuff? And then I'll do something kind of great. And my own life is interesting enough where if my career is not galvanizing and riveting, something else is. I have many neuroses, but one of them is not I will never work again.

What do you see as the major break in your career?

[Meeting] casting director Joy Todd. She did that magical thing that you wish as a young actor or actress might happen.... She got me in a horror movie called "The Burning," which Harvey Weinstein produced. It was filming there in North Tonawanda, N.Y., just outside of Buffalo, and I was making like a thousand dollars a week. It was unbelievable money! I was rolling in dough, sleeping in cash. I think I said one sentence.

Director Zack Snyder recently said there will be more of Ben Affleck's Batman in "Dawn of Justice" than Henry Cavill's Superman, despite their shared billing in the title. As he noted, this is a different Batman than the one played by Christian Bale in the Christopher Nolan movies, so he needs a bit of explaining and context. Plus, Cavill's Superman just had his own standalone movie, so he can take some steps back. »

DC’s Trinity Takes Point In Batman V Superman: Dawn Of Justice Concept Art

Next year, DC’s Trinity will come together – for better or worse – in Zack Snyder’s Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice, and in anticipation of March’s grand event, Warner Bros. is hosting a big presence for the film at the ongoing New York Comic-Con. To commemorate the occasion, the studio is placing a laser focus on the costume design behind Batman, Superman and Diana Prince herself, Wonder Woman.

As detailed in the video above, a tremendous amount of care and detail went into the creation of each superhero guise, built to not only reflect the character, but also the era that they are in. Indeed, today’s video arrives on the heels of a yet-to-be-confirmed report relating to Wonder Woman’s outfits, which states that Gal Gadot’s Amazonian Warrior will don no less than three armors across as many timelines during her appearance in the DC Expanded Universe. »

'Incredibles 2' Gets Summer 2019 Release Date
8 October 2015 11:24 AM, PDT | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

Back in March 2014, Disney announced that The Incredibles 2 is finally moving forward, with The Incredibles writer-director Brad Bird returning to the helm. While there is still much we don't know about the animated movie sequel, the studio announced today that The Incredibles 2 will hit theaters on June 21, 2019. As of now, no other movies have been slated for release on that day, but it comes just one week after Warner Bros.' Justice League Part 2 opens on June 14, 2019.

Writer-director Brad Bird revealed last month that the Incredibles 2 script is almost done. It isn't known yet if the filmmaker has finished his work on the script, or when we might get the first story details. He did tease in April that his sequel will examine superhero movie trends, which is fitting since his sequel will open between DC's Justice League Part 2 and Marvel's Inhumans (July 12, 2019).

Neil DeGrasse Tyson Knows How 'Batman' Can Beat 'Superman'

Iconic superheroes Batman and Superman have done battle in the pages of DC Comics before, most notably in Frank Miller's iconic The Dark Knight Returns. Next year's Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice will be the first time these heroes have squared off on the big screen, and ever since the project was announced in 2013, fans have been wondering if there is any way The Dark Knight stands a chance against the incredible powers of the Man of Steel. Astrophysicist Neil DeGrasse Tyson has added some insight into this debate, revealing to Tech Insider that there is a way Batman can defeat Superman, but it's not quite what you think.

"If Batman is ever to defeat Superman, it is not in a cage, it is some other way. It is the court of public opinion, perhaps. Forces that are not how big are your muscles or how fast you »

Manglehorn | Blu-ray Review
6 October 2015 8:00 AM, PDT | ioncinema | See recent ioncinema news »

David Gordon Green’s listless character study Manglehorn, starring a pleasantly unassuming Al Pacino arrives on Blu-ray shortly before his next (and unfortunately unpleasant) feature Our Brand is Crisis hits theaters. Premiering in competition at the 2014 Venice Film Festival, Pacino’s demure performance was the title’s championed aspect in an underwhelming follow-up to the Green’s superb duo of 2013 titles, Joe and Prince Avalanche. Unfortunately, the IFC acquisition performed as underwhelmingly at the box office as it did with a lot of critics. Although Green has systematically been injecting incredibly prolific actors into indie-inspired projects, the results often seem compromised in comparison to earlier titles in his filmography.

Green continues his examination of masculine relationships in an adaptation from first time screenwriter Paul Logan. Another Texas set endeavor, Green’s use of a forlorn and raggedly unhappy Al Pacino is definitely the film’s greatest asset, but isn’t »

Despite Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice being almost six months away from release (25th March, 2016, if you want to put it in your diary), the movie’s marketing team have already shifted into viral mode. Not with a trailer, nor with a press release – but something more subversive, blurring the lines between fiction and reality: a profile piece of Lex Luthor (Jesse Eisenberg) on respected business website Fortune Magazine (the people responsible for the Fortune 500 list).

The article takes the form of an interview with Luthor, detailing his rise to the top of the tech world with his company LexCorp. Lex himself is described as “a 31-year-old wunderkind who transformed an aging petrochemical and heavy machinery dinosaur into a tech darling of the Fortune 500 in what some call a superhuman feat.” A superhuman feat. Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice classified PG-13 for violence and “sensuality”

It was expected that Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice would get a PG-13 rating (the equivalent of a 12A here in the UK), but the reason for it is rather surprising.

According to the MPAA, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice has been awarded a PG-13 rating for, “intense sequences of violence and action throughout, and some sensuality.” Sensuality, eh? Wonder where that might come from…

So, we can expect the movie to get a 12A here in the UK from the BBFC.

Batman V Superman: Dawn Of Justice gets PG-13 for "some sensuality"
29 September 2015 10:09 PM, PDT | Den of Geek | See recent Den of Geek news »

The official PG-13 rating for Batman V Superman: Dawn Of Justice is in. The explanation for it is an eyebrow-raiser...

Well, we didn't quite see part of this story coming. Whilst it was a given that Zack Snyder's Batman V Superman: Dawn Of Justice - the film that's the springboard for the DC movie universe - would get a PG-13 rating in the Us, the explanation as to why is slightly unexpected.

The film has now been rated in the Us, and that PG-13 confirmed. But according to the MPAA, it's got that rating for "intense sequences of violence and action throughout, and some sensuality".

That Batman and Superman bromance might be a little more intense than we thought. It reminds us of the moment when Paddington was classified PG in the UK, with the original guidance noting "mild sex references". In that instance, it was in reference to »

'Batman v Superman' Is Rated PG-13 for Intense Violence and Sensuality
29 September 2015 6:20 PM, PDT | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

With just under six months left until Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice hits theaters, the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA), via Box Office Mojo, has issued a PG-13 rating for the highly-anticipated superhero movie. Almost all superhero projects are crafted for PG-13, so the rating itself isn't surprising. There is a bit of a surprise, though, in the rationale for this rating, with the MPAA revealing the movie features, "intense sequences of violence and action throughout, and some sensuality." Does this mean there is romance in the cards for some of these DC Comics characters?

"Some sensuality" is quite broad, of course, and that could be anything from kissing to dancing to actual sex scenes in the bedroom. Henry Cavill's Clark Kent and Amy Adams' Lois Lane will presumably still be a romantic couple in Batman v Superman, but it's possible that some of this "sensuality »

About a month ago, Michael Shannon said in an interview about returning to Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice that his character of Zod would have “flipper hands”. While it seemed like a bizarre story, he later admitted that it wasn’t true. Now it would seem we can’t believe anything he has said.

“Flippers? I think that might be a prime example of my scatological humor,” he told ScreenRant. “People ask me a lot about Batman v Superman and I really don’t have anything to say about it, so sometimes I just make up stuff, which I’m sure Warner Bros. is really happy about.”

Director Zack Snyder also went on record to say that the majority of rumours spread about the Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice are way off base. So perhaps we won’t know anything concrete until we actually see the film.

Batman v Superman: 9 things we learned at Comic-Con

You've seen the spine-tingling new trailer. You've heard the buzz emerging from today's Hall H panel at Comic-Con.

Now you can catch up on all the essential tidbits from Warner Bros' presentation of Batman vs Superman: Dawn of Justice, which featured Zack Snyder, Ben Affleck, Henry Cavill, Amy Adams, Jesse Eisenberg, Gal Gadot, Jeremy Irons and Holly Hunter.

1. Remember the controversy around Man of Steel's collateral damage? Dawn of Justice turns that on its head in a very shrewd way – it turns out that Bruce Wayne was in Metropolis at the end of MoS, and the destruction he witnessed is what inspires him to turn against Superman here.

2. They say the pen is mightier than the sword, and at least initially Superman will fight back against Batman in print rather than person. Clark will use his new position at the Daily Planet to put a negative media spin on the Batman and his vigilante tactics.

3. Lex Luthor? Has hair. Surely the most controversial revelation yet. Luthor obtained General Zod's corpse after the climax of Man of Steel, and also got his hands on a little kryptonite into the bargain.

4. Although Luthor's plans remain fairly mysterious from the footage we've seen, it's clear that he has some influence over the US government, embodied by Holly Hunter's unnamed senator. Eisenberg's performance looks heavy on snark and not a million miles from his Mark Zuckerberg, which is just fine by us.

5. Snyder is playing fast and loose with canonical geography here: he confirmed that Gotham and Metropolis are sister cities, comparable to San Francisco and Oakland in real life, which makes Bruce Wayne's proximity to the fallout more plausible.

6. There's also a very pronounced economic divide between the two cities: Metropolis is the San Francisco in this equation, the city of choice for the successful and powerful, whereas Gotham is portrayed as a city populated by the needy and downtrodden. "There are some very smart ideas [in the movie] about wealth and power, and how power engenders fear," Affleck said. "It's smart, so I'm even more proud to be part of that."

7. Gadot described her version of Wonder Woman as "loving, sophisticated, with a lot of emotional intelligence… I've been given a huge opportunity to show this strong, beautiful side of women." Though she has the strength of a superhero, perhaps her greatest weapon is her emotional insight and resilience.

8. Snyder sold Affleck on playing Batman by pitching him as a burnout: "He's at the end of his rope, he's older…" and therefore perfect for him, Affleck revealed with a self-deprecating laugh.

9. The film will acknowledge the clear fact that Superman can easily destroy Batman in a one-on-one fight – Batman's mech suit is less about enhancing his powers than it is about self-defence. "It's a self-preservation concept, it's not really enhancing his strength so much as it's just buying him time."
